Back Yard Tilapia fish farm setup 1

Tank culture of fresh tilapia can be a rewarding hobby. I began raising fish for personal consumption and enjoyed the wonderful results but quickly realized that larger amounts of fish production could result in a profitable venture. I then decided to convert my little fish raising operation to a back yard tilapia hatchery. A hatchery that could supply a commercially built grow out facility. I realized that one of the biggest financial risk are the fish themselves. I realized that by creating my own hatchery, I could improve the fish quality by selecting color and larger body form for reproduction. The farm is just at the completion stages, It has been a lot of work for me and Jose ” the chicken whisperer”. Next we will add fish! Questions or comments are welcome @ tilapiafarm@hotmail.com.

You have a really cool set up. I would like to try something in my garage. How would I make the biological filter and clarifier? Also how do I know how big I need it? Would it have to be half the size of my tank?

jeepers – I think its a good thing I went with rabbits?? I can make 112 lbs of meat less bones every 2 months in the space of a half a back bedroom.

blackboy, I how many gallons is the tank. If you dont know. Give me the depth and the width and i will calcualte it for you. once you determin your tank size you want a pump that will turn the system over every 2 hours. Not all that flow goes through the filter. your filter should be dosed 4 times the size of your tank every 24 hours. send me your gallonage or measurments and I will run the numbers for you in a form you will inderstand. please send to tilapiafarm@hotmail.com

I am looking into starting my very farm in Orlando, I will have two indoor aquariums and one outdoor grow tank. the only part I am having trouble with is finding what kind of water pump or aeration to use for the outside tank…there wont be hundreds of tilapia just 25-50 or so to get started for personal use.

If you have any links to a few water pumps or koi pond filter systems that will get the job done PLEASE let me know. :)

JP, I would recommend that you begin your tilapia experience indoors in a aquarium. once you master keeping fish alive you can try and breed your own fingerlings. once you have free baby fish, you can build your own out door tilapia grow out pond or tank. mine is a little complicated but you really don’t need all that. just a tank and a grow bed is all that is really needed. some internet research on aquaponics will answer any questions you may have or you can email me at tilapiafarm@hotmail.com

congrats! looks awesome. I’d like to do something like that in KC but I know NOTHING about. I don’t necessarily want to do it as a business but more just to have food all the time. how did you learn to do all that?

Thanks, I will be adding fish soon. Water temps in NC are around 55 Degrees. When it stablizes around 65 I will add the Tilapia and use propane to get it up to around 80 degrees. Keep checking on us and Thanks for commenting. The Tilapia Farmer.
